Beijing, Feb. 25 – The retail sales of consumer goods in China rose 15
percent year-on-year to 220 billion yuan (28.2 billion U.S. dollars)
during the week-long Spring Festival holiday, Xinhua News Agency
reported, citing sources with the Ministry of Commerce on Saturday.
Retail sales in the catering industry surged 18 percent over last year’s
Spring Festival holiday.
Ninety-five percent of the restaurants in Beijing received reservations
for family reunion dinners during the holiday.
Meanwhile, high-end household electric appliances and digital products
became hot sellers in major cities.
Motorcycles priced between 3,000 yuan and 5,000 yuan sold well in rural
areas of central Hubei Province and eastern Jiangsu Province as more and
more farmers rode motorcycles to make New Year visits to relatives and
friends.
Farmers’ consumption capability is on the rise partly because China’s
rural cooperative medical care system, under which the government helps
fund farmers’ medical expenses, will cover 80 percent of counties this
year and partly because students in rural areas will be exempted from
paying tuition fees in the nine-year compulsory education, said the
ministry.

A German collector voluntarily returned 18 archeological pieces to Peru,
including a pre-Colombian copper funeral mask, the Peruvian Foreign
Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

The Peruvian consulate accepted the objects from the collector in Hamburg
in 2004, but it took them two years to repatriate the pieces because they
had to be authenticated and insured for shipment, the statement said.

The valuable pieces, which were smuggled out of Peru, also include small
sculptures and ceramics belonging to the pre-Incan Chimu, Viru and
Mochica cultures.

The collector considered it as his moral responsibility to restore this
part of Peru’s archeological heritage, which had been illegally removed
from the country, said the statement.

A large number of precious ancient objects of high historical and
cultural value have been smuggled out of Peru in recent years. Earlier
this year, the U.S. police seized 412 ancient Peruvian artifacts in an
investigation into smuggling in Florida.

United States Olympic Committee (USOC) official Steve Roush said on
Monday he is confident that organizers of the 2008 Olympic Games could
successfully address problems like air pollution and traffic congestions.

“Those two areas continue to be a concern to me. But I’ve also seen where
they have addressed. I think, they have improved to the level that it
won’t have negative impact on the Games,” Roush told Xinhua.

Roush said that he used to be worried about the environment and traffic
in Beijing, but a traffic plan carried out last November in the Chinese
capital quashed his concerns.

Last November Beijing imposed a six-day ban on at least 490,000
government vehicles and advised private drivers to take buses to make way
for a summit meeting between Chinese and African leaders. Traffic was
surprisingly easy even in the busiest areas during the week and citizens
were treated to blue skies.

“Blue sky, beautiful weather and very little traffic. I was very
impressed,” said Roush.

Roush, who has visited China for 15 times, spoke highly of the venues
that Beijing are building for the 2008 Games.

“I am very impressed with the quality of the venues and facilities. They
are spectacular. No one will be complaining about the venues,” he said.

“It will be a challenge for London (2012) and others to try to be better.”

Roush added that the fact that many competition venues are located in the
Olympic Green are a good news to the athletes.

“It is compact so that it allows the athletes to move to venues from the
village with minimal transportation, which is always nice,” he said.

Two crew members aboard the International Space Station have completed a
successful spacewalk Monday morning, dumping some obsolete equipment and
preparing the outpost for future assembly missions, according to NASA TV.

The duo stepped out of the Quest Airlock at 6:24 EDT (1024 GMT) Monday.
NASA astronaut Clayton Anderson is the lead sapcewalker, wearing the
spacesuit with red stripes. Fyodor Yurchikhin, the Russian cosmonaut and
station commander, wearing the all-white suit, is the second spacewalker.

Riding on the end of the space station’s robotic arm maneuvered by Flight
Engineer Oleg Kotov inside station, Anderson jettisoned a
refrigerator-size ammonia tank by shoving it opposite of the station’s
direction of travel. He also rid the orbiting complex of an outdated
camera mounting.

They also installed a television camera stanchion,reconfigured a power
supply for an antenna assembly, and performed several get- ahead tasks.

The excursion lasted for seven hours and 41 minutes, and the two
astronauts have got back into the Airlock safely at 2:05 p.m. EDT (1805
GMT).

Normally, NASA tries to avoid littering in space, but they have no other
choice this time. The ammonia tank was no longer needed and it has to be
removed. Since the U.S. space shuttle fleet is to be retired in 2010,
NASA officials could not make room in a shuttle cargo bay to transport
the junk equipment back to Earth.

A few hours after the spacewalk, a docked Progress 25 cargo craft will
fire its thrusters raising the station’s orbit. This reboost, along with
a reboost performed Friday, provides the proper phasing for an upcoming
Progress 26 launch and docking.

Moreover, Progress 25 firing also clears the station and provides docking
opportunities when space shuttle Endeavor arrives on mission STS-118,
which is scheduled to launch on Aug. 7.

Thousands of Harry Potter fans in China swarmed into book stores in
Beijing on Saturday to get the seventh and final volume of the boy
wizard’’s adventures after standing in line for several hours from the
mid-night.

Chinese book stores opened their doors for sales of “Harry Potter and the
Deathly Hallows” at 7:01 a.m., Beijing time, together with the world.

More than 200 books have been sold in Wangfujing Book Store within 40
minutes. The Beijing Book Building has sold 2,301 books till 6:00 p.m.
Saturday, statistics show, 700 books more than the first-day sales of the
sixth version.

“The previous versions did very well here, and we expect the seventh book
to create a new selling record among the Harry Potter series,” said Yang
Xinyuan, manager of the original version books department of the Beijing
Book Building.

“I didn”t have the opportunity to get the previous books at the same
time with other readers in the world, so I have to catch the last chance
to read it at the first time,” said Zhu Shengtao, 19, who arrived at the
Beijing Book Building at around 9:00 p.m. Friday.

Liu Jiangeng, a junior college student, was lucky enough to be the
pioneer leading the queue by arriving at the Wangfujing Book Store at
8:00 p.m. Friday.

“I spent the rest hours wandering around the store, waiting for the sky
lit up. I don”t feel tired,” he said.

Japan coach Ivica Osim doesn’t dare to underestimate pre-tournament
favorites Australia, who had some awkward performances in the group
stage, as he considers Saturday’s clash is his toughest task since his
reign at the defending champions.

“I see this as the most difficult match,” said Osim, who replaced
Brazilian legend Zico after last year’s Germany World Cup. “Japan haven’t
played many opponents at this level, except Ghana, and that was a
friendly.”

“Australia have overcome their difficult period and are improving. No
team can play perfectly and a team who can manage to win even when they
are not in good shape is a strong side, as Brazil did in the Copa

Australia qualified for the last eight in an awkward way. After held by
Oman 1-1 in the opener, they went down 3-1 to a shinning Iraq side,

But the Japanese led Group B comfortably with two easy wins and an
unfortunate draw with Qatar.

Glaciers, ice caps to dominate sea level rise this century: study

Ice loss from glaciers and ice caps is expected to cause more global sea
rise during this century than the massive Greenland and Antarctic ice
sheets, according to a new University of Colorado study released on
Thursday.

The researchers concluded that glaciers and ice caps are currently
contributing about 60 percent of the world’s ice to the oceans and the
rate has been markedly accelerating in the past decade. The contribution
is presently about 100 cubic miles of ice annually — a volume nearly
equal to the water in Lake Erie — and is rising by about three cubic
miles per year.

In contrast, the team estimated Greenland is now contributing about 28
percent of the total global sea rise from ice loss and Antarctica is
contributing about 12 percent. Greenland is not expected to catch up to
glaciers and ice caps in terms of sea level rise contributions until the
end of the century, according to the study.

A paper on the subject appears in the July 19 issue of the journal
Science. “One reason for this study is the widely held view that the
Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets will be the principal causes of
sea-level rise,” said Mark Meier, lead study author. “But we show that it
is the glaciers and ice caps, not the two large ice sheets, that will be
the big players in sea rise for at least the next few generations.”

Meier estimated there are several hundred thousand small glaciers and
small, pancake-shaped ice caps in polar and temperate regions. They range
from modest, high mountain glaciers to huge glaciers like the Bering
Glacier in Alaska, which measures about 5, 000 square miles in area and
is nearly one-half mile thick in places.

The accelerating contribution of glaciers and ice caps is due in part to
rapid changes in the flow of tidewater glaciers that discharge icebergs
directly into the ocean, said the study. Many tidewater glaciers are
undergoing rapid thinning, stretching and retreat, which causes them to
speed up and deliver increased amounts of ice into the world’s oceans.

The team estimated accelerating melt of glaciers and ice caps could add
from 4 inches to 9.5 inches of additional sea level rise globally by
2100. This does not include the expansion of warming ocean water, which
could potentially double those numbers.

“At the very least, our projections indicate that future sea- level rise
may be larger than anticipated, and that the component due to glaciers
and ice caps will continue to be substantial,” wrote the authors.

Gene identified for Crohn’s disease in children

The U.S. researchers announced Wednesday that they have identified a gene
variant that raises a child’s risk of Crohn’s disease, a chronic and
painful condition attributed to inflammation of the gastrointestinal
tract.

The research reinforces previous results by German researchers, who found
the same gene variant associated with the adult form of Crohn’s disease.

Researchers from The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and The
University of Pennsylvania reported their results in a letter in the
August issue of the journal Gut.

“Because Crohn’s disease is complex, with multiple genes interacting with
each other and with environmental factors, it’s important to sort out
specific genes and to replicate previous findings,” said the study’s
first author Robert Baldassano. “There are different types of Crohn’s
disease, so classifying types by genetic profiles may help us select the
most appropriate treatments for each patient.”

The study compared the genomes of 143 children with Crohn’s disease to
genomes of 282 matched control subjects. The study team found that 64
percent of children with Crohn’s disease had a specific variant form of
the gene ATG16L1, compared with 52 percent of the healthy children. The
odds ratio for children with the gene variant was 1.62 compared to
control children, meaning that those who have the variant were 62 percent
more likely to have Crohn’s disease than children with the more common
allele.

A separate test that analyzed trios (a Crohn’s patient and both parents)
also found an association between the ATG16L1 gene variant and disease
symptoms. This finding strengthened the results of the pediatric
case-control study.
